Research Capabilities of International University Students Rank Among the Top of VNU-HCM
Over the past years, International University – Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City has not only been recognized as an environment for international-standard English-language education, but also made a strong impression with the vibrant and in-depth development of student scientific research activities. Particularly, an increasing number of students from the university have published high-quality international works even before graduation, including papers appearing in journals in the Q1 group – the top 25% of the world’s most reputable scientific journals.
If previously, international publications were considered an achievement for graduate students or experienced lecturers, then today at International University (IU), many students have gradually reached global academic standards at an early stage. This is seen as a clear demonstration of the research-integrated training model that the university has pursued for many years.
Prof. Dr. Dinh Duc Anh Vu – Deputy Rector of International University – said: “The internationalized learning environment combined with modern laboratory facilities has created conditions for students to engage in scientific research from their first and second years. Not only do students learn theoretical knowledge in class, but they also actively participate in research groups with lecturers, conduct projects, process data, and gradually develop professional scientific thinking.”.

Many research fields of strength at the university, such as artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, biotechnology, data science, environment, or logistics, are attracting a large number of students to participate. “During this process, many students have become co-authors of international publications on the ISI/Scopus system, and even some have published in Q1 journals with high impact factors. Notably, some students, despite not having graduated, have already achieved outstanding research profiles, sufficient to compete for postgraduate scholarships abroad”, Prof. Dr. Dinh Duc Anh Vu – Deputy Rector of International University – emphasized.
Having international publications at an early stage not only helps students enhance their professional skills but also cultivates critical thinking, teamwork skills, academic writing abilities, and proficiency in using professional English.
Currently, student scientific research activities at International University are no longer just a trend but have become an essential part of the training journey. Every year, the university organizes a student research conference with dozens of projects across various fields. The scale of the conference has continuously expanded in recent years, with an average of about 60 research projects annually, involving hundreds of students and potential learners from all departments and disciplines.
The difference of students at International University lies in their ability to access international-standard research from an early stage due to the fully English-speaking learning environment. This enables students to easily read specialized materials, participate in international conferences, and connect with foreign research groups. Many student projects are conducted in collaboration with professors and scientists from the United States, Australia, South Korea, Japan, or Europe.
Not only focusing on publication achievements, many student research projects also have high practical application value, focusing on solving real-life and business-related issues. From technological solutions for healthcare and the environment to the application of artificial intelligence in data analysis, students are demonstrating strong creativity and adaptability in response to the demands of the digital era.
According to lecturers, the fact that students have published in Q1 journals or participated in A* conferences before graduation is the result of a training process that emphasizes practical learning, experimentation, and research. This success also reflects a change in the mindset of young people today: they are not only studying for degrees but also aiming to create new knowledge and value for society.
In the context of universities promoting innovation and international integration, the research achievements of students of International University show the great potential of the new generation of Vietnamese intellectuals. From the university classroom, many students have gradually entered the global academic arena through their research capabilities and their aspirations to conquer knowledge.
