INTRODUCTION TO INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY – VNU-HCM

HISTORY OF FORMATION

Educational innovation is taking place on a global scale. Vietnamese education, especially higher education, needs to take a step forward in the process of innovation and international integration. Training high-quality human resources must meet the needs of the country's industrialization and modernization period, actively integrating into the international community. Ho Chi Minh City, along with Hanoi, has a special position in this process.

Therefore, in the university and college network planning for the period 2001 – 2010, issued together with Decision No. 47/2001/QĐ-TTg dated April 4, 2001 of the Prime Minister, it requires: “Universities and colleges in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City must lead the process of integration with the university and college education systems of countries in the region and internationally, diversify domestic and foreign investment forms, and link with reputable universities and colleges worldwide to enhance the quality of education.”

Regarding the needs of students nationwide, and especially in Ho Chi Minh City, for international quality education to obtain internationally recognized degrees, in English and other strong languages, which are increasing rapidly. The number of students studying abroad is growing significantly; international or hybrid education programs are developing; some foreign universities have or are preparing to establish training facilities in Vietnam. Recognizing this situation, in its medium-term strategy for building and developing from 2001–2005, the Ho Chi Minh City University of Science and Technology (VNU-HCM) clearly outlined: 'Establish the International University based on cooperation with reputable foreign universities, creating conditions for staff and students to study abroad locally, and through this, VNU-HCM can learn, compare experiences and quality, and its own training.'

After nearly two years of developing the project to establish the International University and submitting it to the Prime Minister, on December 5, 2003, the Prime Minister officially signed the decision to establish the International University.
